KAI.RETU'S FORESTS

Afrika Mosaics is a constituent of Kai.retu’s Forests, a regenerative culture initiative addressing the global metacrisis by reconnecting people, land, and ancestral wisdom. Grounded in kairetu, the Gikūyū expression of feminine life force and continuity, it weaves art, technology, and indigenous practice into living systems of renewal.

Through regenerative food systems, biophilic design, indigenous learning and living art, Kai.retu’s Forests fosters resilient ecosystems and cultures rooted in care, balance, and regeneration.

Keeper Of The Practice

Portrait of the artist

Githaka Karuri is a mosaic artist whose path has been shaped by lived experience, self-learning, and the guidance of many teachers encountered along the way. Without formal art school training, his practice emerged through curiosity, discipline, and devotion to craft.

Mosaic became the medium through which his creative lineage took root. What began as a solitary exploration has grown into a practice held in gratitude—one that honors those who taught him and seeks to pass that knowledge forward. He works not only as a maker, but as a keeper of skills, processes, and ways of seeing.

His creative expression extends into poetry, jewelry, weaving, natural building, and regenerative food systems, each informing the other.

Githaka has led and collaborated on mosaic murals for institutions including Safaricom, Nyumbani Children’s Village, Shree Kuchi Leva Patel Samaj School, and Sacred Heart Cathedral, alongside numerous private commissions in Kenya. His works also live in homes across the world.

The Art

Mosaic making is the wellspring of Githaka Karuri’s creative expression. His work moves fluidly across scale and surface, taking form as interior and exterior wall murals, hanging panels, floors, swimming pools, furniture, sculptures, vessels, and mosaics woven into natural building designs.

Working primarily with recycled and reclaimed materials—granite, marble, ceramic tile, glass, stone, and other found media—each piece is an act of renewal, giving continuity to matter and meaning.

His practice is rooted in the understanding that he is nature, and that art is culture. Every mosaic becomes a story—spoken through symbolism, flowing lines, colour, mood, and movement—carrying memory, place, and intention. The pages that follow offer a selection from this ongoing mosaic journey.
